Six External Stressors That Damage Your Skin
Our skin is very important to us! It protects us from the natural elements and separates “us” from the outside world.
Our skin can also be an indicator of our health and aging. Wrinkles, pores, and other traits our skin takes on can tell us about the state of our bodies.
In the same way, our internal health affects our skin and reflects through pimples, rashes, etc. There are many factors that contribute to skin condition, including genetics, sleep, age, diet, and your Ayurvedic dosha.
Of course, in the late summer months, we should be extra mindful of taking care of our skin.
According to the ASCP (Associated Skin Care Professionals), the top environmental stressors that damage the skin are: 1) sunlight 2) air condition 3) temperature & humidity 4) smoking 5) diet 6) technology.
1) Sun exposure
Sunlight causes the most extensive damage to the body, with UVA and UVB light damaging skin the most. Skin cancer and DNA damage are some of the most formidable effects of too much exposure.
2)Air Pollution
Exposure to air pollution can lead to chemical imbalances, inflammation, and skin cancer, as well as worsen skin issues like acne, and eczema.
3) Extreme temperatures
Whether cold or hot, extreme temperatures can be stressors for the skin. Freezing weather can lead to dryness and flakiness, while excessive heat can cause dehydration and redness.
4) Smoking
Smoking is already notoriously bad for your lungs, but did you know it also affects your skin? Tobacco smoke contains harmful toxins that can reduce oxygen supply to the skin and speed up aging.
5)Diet
What you eat and drink can affect how your skin looks and feels. An imbalanced diet can cause inflammation and premature aging, and dehydration can cause dryness and loss of elasticity.
6) Overuse of Technology
The constant presence of modern technology exposes us to what feels like a never ending stream of blue light from various devices. Prolonged exposure can contribute to skin damage.
So, what things can we do to prevent excess damage to our skin?
Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen is crucial to protect your skin from UV radiation. Be sure to use it even indoors, as UV rays can pass through windows.
Skincare with antioxidants such as resveratrol and glutathione can help slow down unnatural aging and promote repair.
Reducing exposure to blue light by limiting screen time, using blue light filters, and wearing reflective glasses when using electronic devices, can help reduce continuous exposure.
Regular cleansing and exfoliation can aid in removing pollutants that accumulate on the skin.
